OVERVIEW
Autonomous weapon systems based on deep neural networks place us in a scenario of dehumanization. Delegating the decision to kill to a machine goes against human dignity and people's rights. The ethical problem arises when military systems cease to be operated by people and perform their tasks with autonomy of use., without human intervention in the decision and attack processes. Hovering drones and swarms of drones can easily incorporate autonomous ai-based decision systems and can change the geopolitical map of armed conflict.. We will talk about the essential characteristics of systems based on deep neural networks, of the associated ethical problems in both civilian and military applications, of the levels of human control in the use of these weapons and of the prospects for the future.
PROFILE SPEAKERS:
Pere Brunet Crosa – Royal Academy of engineering (raing.es) He is a retired professor of Computer Languages and Systems at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. He was responsible for the research group in Modeling, Visualization and Computer Graphics of your University, and was Vice-Rector for Research at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia between 1988 and 1992. He started working in the field of computer science in 1967, and began his research activity within computer graphics in the year 1979 after several works in the area of automatic and signal processing. His group was a pioneer in the development of research in computer graphics in Spain, which later continued with the birth and consolidation of numerous research groups.
Tica Font – Centre for Peace Studies Barcelona: Tica Font has been a teacher in non-formal education, tutor of the National Distance University (UNED) and environmental technician at the Diputació de Barcelona. She has been the founder of the Centre d'Estudis per la Pau J.M. Delàs. She is an expert in Defense Economics, arms trade, defence budgets, military industry, new weapons and security.
